New guidance on gas detection at WWEM 2016

Gas detection has always been an important component of the WWEM events, but organiser Marcus Pattison says: “Following the publication of important new guidance on confined space entry and a new standard for toxic gas detectors, the Gas Detection Zone at WWEM 2016 will be busier than ever.

“Past events have shown that the Gas Detection Zone is hugely popular with health & safety managers and staff that have to work in confined spaces or areas where there is a possibility of exposure to toxic or explosive dusts and gases.”

Call for papers issued for Trees, People and the Built Environment 3

A call for papers has been issued for a major triennial international urban trees research conference. Trees People and the Built Environment 3 (TPBE 3) will take place on 5-6 April 2017, at the University of Birmingham, and follows on from acclaimed events in 2011 and 2014.

This year the conference will focus on two significant areas of research; Roads to Place - Why trees are an integral part of highway transport design on Day 1 and The Health Crisis – the role of trees in improving human health (Mental, physical, social and cultural) on Day 2.

Engineers’ House venue to host Wood for Good conference

EEF Venues’ Engineers’ House conference venue in Clifton Down, Bristol is to host a conference on 14th June to support a campaign by Wood for Good to showcase how timber construction can help to solve the current housing crisis.

The theme of the conference is ‘The Self/Custom Build Timber House: Addressing the Housing Supply Challenge’ and is one of a series of conferences organised by Wood for Good, the timber industry’s communications organisation.

Gloucestershire researchers to lead international workshop on food security

Researchers at the University of Gloucestershire have secured funding from the UK’s Newton Fund to work with researchers from Egypt and South Africa on understanding water and food security issues. The support comes from a British Council Researcher Links award.

Drs Kenny Lynch and Julie Ingram will lead a workshop in September with colleagues from Stellenbosch University and the American University Cairo to develop understanding of how new methods in ecosystems services can help secure our water and food security.  The workshop will take place at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study.
