EEF Venues’ Engineers’ House conference venue in Clifton Down, Bristol is to host a conference on 14th June to support a campaign by Wood for Good to showcase how timber construction can help to solve the current housing crisis.

The theme of the conference is ‘The Self/Custom Build Timber House: Addressing the Housing Supply Challenge’ and is one of a series of conferences organised by Wood for Good, the timber industry’s communications organisation.

The aim of the conference is to demystify what is meant by Custom Build and to explain the motivation behind the introduction of The Self Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015.

With the election of the new Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, who has pledged to enable the delivery of 2,000 more homes a year in the city, housing in all its forms is now top of the agenda in Bristol and the South West.

Craig White, chairman of Wood for Good and co-founder of the award winning Bristol-based architecture practice, White Design, said:”Our event at Engineers’ House is designed to inspire and inform current and future generations of architects, builders and householders.

“Timber construction is changing the face of modern building for the better through faster build times and off-site fabrication methods. Wood for Good has been at the forefront of this agenda for many years, promoting timber’s versatility in meeting the most challenging design specifications as well as its environmental capabilities that could build a truly sustainable legacy.”

As part of the campaign, architect and author Peter Wilson has been commissioned to produce an illustrated book titled ‘The Modern Timber House.’

Commenting on why they chose to hold the conference at Engineers’ House, Craig White, said:” The West and South West of England have been in the forefront of delivering new custom building approaches to housing supply. We chose to hold the conference at Engineers’ House because the location is excellent and it has all of the facilities and technology we need, as well as an experienced and supportive team. An added bonus is that Engineers’ House is a fine Grade 11 listed building set within wooded grounds so it is an attractive venue for our audience.”

Attendance at the conference can contribute to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for design and construction professionals.

The event runs from 09:30 - 16:30 on Tuesday 14th June at Engineers’ House, The Promenade, Clifton Down, Bristol, and is open to all. The individual delegate fee to attend the one-day conference is £96.00 inclusive of VAT, finger buffet lunch, refreshments throughout the day and a comprehensive delegate pack. Discounted ticket prices are available for members of professional institutes, company/group bookings and students. Each delegate will also receive a copy of The Modern Timber House.
