ACE welcomes measured UK response to Fukushima

The Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) has welcomed the final report of HM Chief Inspector of Nuclear Installations into the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.  Dr Mike Weightman concluded that there are no serious weaknesses in the UK’s regulatory approach.  Dr Weightman also stated that the industry and others had responded constructively to the interim report in March, demonstrating an on-going commitment to continuous improvement.

New monitoring technology helps reveal Arctic secrets

A group of Arctic researchers has employed the latest monitoring technology to investigate the effects of climate change, by measuring temperature and salinity in the water column beneath surface ice. The results of the investigation, which utilised YSI’s new 'Castaway-CTD', could cast new light on our understanding of the ways in which shifting ocean currents impact upon the climate in northern Europe.

Awards already being won at Olympic Park, nine months before games begin

The London 2012 Olympic Velodrome has won its own award almost nine months before the cycling begins, it was announced today.
 
The Velodrome, which was designed by Hopkins Architects on behalf of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), has been awarded the Prime Minister’s Better Public Award at a ceremony in London.

The Velodrome is one of the most sustainable venues on the Olympic Park in terms of design and construction. Sustainable choices were made wherever possible; from the sourcing of wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council to be used on the track and external cladding, to the installation of a 100 per-cent naturally ventilated system. This ventilation creates a perfect track-level temperature, eliminating the need for air conditioning.

Glennon Brother presents at Wood NI Seminar

Mike Glennon, Joint Managing Director of Irish Timber processing firm, Glennon Brothers, was speaker at Wood NI’s Timber Seminar at the Ulster Hall in Belfast today (Wed 12th Oct), organised in conjunction with PLACE (the Architecture and Built Environment Centre for Northern Ireland).

The Seminar, entitled ‘Timber Construction and Design in Northern Ireland: Using Sustainable and Renewable Materials’, saw Mike Glennon speak about the importance of using home-grown timber, the wider Irish Sawmilling Sector and Glennon Brothers’ own application of home-grown timber.

 Young people working towards a career in gas engineering will be able to gain valuable hands-on training thanks to a new contract between Kier North Tyneside and leading training provider JTL to tackle youth unemployment in the region. The contract will see all JTL gas trainees carry out their appliances assessments at Kier’s brand new gas assessment centre in Killingworth, which provides state-of-the-art gas training facilities to the whole of the north-east.

The regeneration project in Blaenau Gwent, in the South Wales Valleys began in 2005. It will provide a revitalised community which will act as a flagship project for delivering the Welsh Government’s sustainable development agenda.
