Minister works with small retailers on Wales’ carrier bag charge

Small retailers should find it easy to manage Wales’s carrier bag charge when it comes into force in October, following an announcement today by Environment Minister, John Griffiths.

 As of 1st October, shoppers in Wales will have to pay a minimum of 5p for every carrier bag they are given, in an effort to dramatically cut down on the excessive number of bags given out each year.

 The charge will also mean that retailers in Wales will be obliged to keep a record of the number of bags they issue and account for how proceeds from the carrier charge are used.

Alumasc External Wall Insulation chosen for Bristol CESP Project

 Thermally efficient Swistherm External Wall Insulation (EWI) from Alumasc has been used on the pioneering, energy-saving refurbishment of a Bristol apartment block.

 The £1.5million upgrade of 16-storey Rawnsley House is thought to be the first in the UK to benefit from the Community Energy Savings Programme, a Government fund delivered to homes in low income areas through partnerships between Local Authorities, Community Groups and Energy Companies.  Landlord Bristol City Council worked closely with EDF Energy and carbon reduction company Sustain to deliver the scheme.

Deadline approaches for ‘continuing competence’ in the waste sector

Waste management facility operators need to be aware of the approaching deadline for Continuing Competence under the CIWM/WAMITAB Operator Competence scheme for England and Wales. 

 This scheme is one of the two routes approved by Defra through which operators can demonstrate their technical competence and it includes a requirement for individuals to keep their competence up to date.  At present, the Continuing Competence aspect of the scheme applies to existing holders of a Certificate of Technical Competence (CoTC) and those individuals who have previously been ‘deemed competent’. In the future, it will also apply to all those who gain a competence qualification.

Call for collaborators on Barnsley's new 'Think Low Carbon' Sustainable Centre

Barnsley College is currently looking for partners at the forefront of sustainable building technologies to collaborate with them on the Barnsley College 'Think Low Carbon' (TLC) project located at the Honeywell site in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. This project is supported financially by the European Union and has attracted £2.75 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme 2007-2013. The remainder of the project is being funded by the College.
