Paul Mitchell Sacks, a Truro based family business established in 1945, were very pleased to supply the Oculus Team in the creation of a temporary urban park for the London Festival of Architecture from 23rd June to 8th July 2012. Oculus is a temporary urban park, created in the style of an amphitheatre, where everybody can rest, recharge and play.
This involved some 7,150 military-grade sand bags, filled with screened recycled sand and reused afterwards by Camden Council.
Roz Barr, Director of Roz Bar Architects, who designed the project, said: “The idea of a paving of sand bags was a response to the brief of building a temporary space in the city.
We wanted to use a ready-made material that could through a new application form a new paving surface and seating area. The notion of using hessian sand bags – an object usually associated with either war or flooding – became appealing because of the World War II Eisenhower Centre in the twin Crescent at the other end of Alfred Place. Itʼs all about ʻmakingʼ – crafting a space through a material application and creating a new public space.”
