Eco-friendly Midlands’ landlord whg is celebrating after its iconic new office building achieved a global environmental accolade.

The landmark Walsall building - 100 Hatherton Street - has been awarded a BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating in recognition of its green credentials.

BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and is the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.

Chief Executive Gary Fulford said: “whg is fully committed to leading the renewable energy revolution and to be awarded the BREEAM excellent rating for our new office is a real achievement.

“We are very proud of our eco friendly building at 100 Hatherton Street – a lot of careful design work went into making sure it is as environmentally friendly as possible.”

The award is the second the office has received since the doors opened in March, having previously been honoured with a Built in Quality award for its high standard of construction and workmanship. The building was also shortlisted for a British Council for Offices corporate workplace award.

Sustainable features that make it stand out from the crowd include photovoltaic panels to generate electricity and a 75 foot high ‘living’ roof, which is home to a swarm of bees and a host of birds. whg launched a green transport plan to promote use of public transport and cycling for colleagues commuting to the office.

whg, one of the biggest employers in the borough, has brought together the majority of its workforce at the town centre site to reduce costs, increase efficiency and improve customer service.

Customers also retain the convenience of local offices, with whg’s estate management teams continuing to work from established bases in Blakenall, Brownhills, Darlaston and Willenhall.
