Business Department moves could emasculate Environment and Heritage watchdogs

In a move that serves once again to highlight the damaging role the Department of Business is playing in undermining environmental and countryside protections, Vince Cable’s Department has published a plan to force the Environment Agency, Natural England and English Heritage to promote ‘sustainable development’.

City Airport targeted by locals and activists as GLA launches enquiry into air quality controls

Today at 8am, City Airport will be treated to a rendition of Britney Spears ‘Toxic’ by activists and locals supporting the enquiry into its air quality controls happening today.

Despite sustained local opposition, in 2009 London City Airport was granted permission to expand from 73,000 flights each year to 120,000. The increase was subject to maintaining controls on air quality and noise pollution, which will be challenged today by the General London Assembly (GLA) environment committee.

The UK Government will support an initiative to build Sustainable Development Goals, which will focus international attention on the need to sustainably manage the world’s natural resources, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman announced today.

UK support for initiating a process to develop Sustainable Development Goals was revealed following meetings in London today between Mr Clegg and President Santos of Colombia, and between Mrs Spelman and Colombian Environment Minister Frank Pearl.

11 out of 10 for the Welsh Government in reducing carbon emissions

The Welsh Government has reduced its carbon emissions by 11% in a single year, beating the 10:10 target to reduce emissions in key areas by 10%. In December 2009, the First Minister confirmed the Welsh Government's commitment to the 10:10 campaign, which asked organisations to reduce their emissions in certain areas by 10% within an ‘action year’ that started in 2010.
