Commenting on the Government’s decision to introduce mandatory GHG emissions reporting, the Environmental Industries Commission’s Executive Chair, Adrian Wilkes, said:
“Having called for its introduction for a number of years, EIC strongly welcomes the Government’s decision to introduce mandatory carbon reporting. As well as showing genuine and refreshing global leadership from the Government, it will also help the UK toward meeting its legally binding carbon reduction targets under the Climate Change Act; help businesses save money; and boost their reputation with consumers.
“Of the options for mandatory reporting set out in last summer’s consultation, we were disappointed that the announcement did not immediately introduce mandatory reporting for all Large Companies – instead adopting a phase-in approach – but the commitment to review progress in 2015 with a view to extending the reporting to cover a larger sector of the economy is welcome re-assurance.
“The outcome of this decision will not only see greater accountability and transparency on carbon reporting at board level, but it also has the potential for major companies to see huge cost savings as they focus more resource on energy efficiency savings measures within their operations.”
