Passenger tax "will unfairly " hit Liverpool John Lennon Airport

jlaLiverpool John Lennon Airport would lose around 150,000 passengers a year if additional taxes are introduced, according to a new report. The government wants to increase air passenger duty (APD) from £12 to up to £16 for short haul flights from next year.

Frontier Economics, commissioned by low cost carrier Easyjet to investigate the impact, estimated that JLA could lose 3.5% of its passengers (148,000) if the change is introduced.

Ban Shopping Bags says EU

bagsTHE EU was under fire last night for seeking a ban on plastic shopping bags to fight pollution. Shops in Britain could be outlawed from stocking them, or alternatively there might be a new tax to dramatically reduce their use.

But angry retailers say any move would hit sales, while doing nothing to save the environment.

Richard Dodd of the British Retail Consortium said yesterday: “A Europe-wide ban on bags is unnecessary. It is likely to alienate customers from the green agenda, which is the opposite of what the European Union is trying to do. It is not appropriate for the EU to get involved.”

Welsh Water 'disappointed' with pollution record

leafWelsh Water has come bottom of a performance league table of water companies, partly due to its pollution record. The Environment Agency (EA) rated the company worst out of all 10 UK firms in 2009.

It said the company has been in eighth to 10th place for three years with only 96% permit compliance.
